Ngauranga to Petone on a 50cc - how?

Post by ramchop »

Just got stopped today on my daily commute. The stretch of state highway 2 from Ngauranga to Petone.

Since I'm only allowed to go 50km/h, the options are the cycle lane/emergency stopping lane or sharing the 100km/h lane with sun strike and fairly blind bends.

I've done the cycle lane for a year and a half now. Never been stopped - never felt unsafe.

Anyway, with it being the holiday season the cops are out in force and one pulled me over. According to him:
- I'm not allowed to use the cycle lane/emergency stopping lane
- I'm not allowed to use the road as although not officially a motorway, it's a 2 laner with an emergency stopping lane - so is generally considered as a motorway.

So, without an instant upgrade (the policeman's suggestion) to my current mode of transport - just how should I get to work?

So what attracts a bigger fine: riding on the hard shoulder of SH2 or riding a 70cc scooter registered as a moped? :)

Not sure on that one i havent been pulled up yet but it would hard for them to prove that your scooter is 70cc without takeing the head off and measureing the piston so as far as they know its a 50cc

my nifty is a 72cc and i still have it regested as a moped and i dont plan on changeing it

Did you get pulled up on sh2 also?

Looking at the road there are only a few spots where the hard shoulder is actually signposted as a cycleway anyway. Especially on the southbound shoulder.

No fine, just the warning and advice. That's the only time I've been stopped along that stretch of road in nearly two years of commuting by scooter.

I spotted a scooter on the southbound cycle path a few weeks back. Never seen that before.

Ive not seen that either. They should fix it up for the cyclists and pedestrians, its getting overgrown and stops inexplicably short. I run along there sometimes.

If the scooter is caught exceeding the max speed for a reg'd 50cc. they could require you to show that it is not modified. The local Honda shop have had a 50 heavily modified to do 100kph (they say) for sale for a while. No takers yet, as they say it has to be re regitered as a G rego, $427.

No one is prepared to have to pay out that sort of money for a hand grenade, yet.
