Scootling compared
a small car and a scooter to make estimates on relative
running costs.
These are approximate costs. The scooter costs
are based on Scootling's Honda Dio SR AF28 model.
These calculations were done on 19 August 2008. This scooter's fuel consumption was measured over
a week of daytime city riding from 2-9 March 2005.
After 100km of riding it took 3.9L of premium (96
octane fuel) to refill. All Scootling's scooters
will run on either 91, 95 or 98 pump fuel.
The car's fuel consumption costs are based on a
Honda Logo 1340cc hatchback over the same routes.
This is a relatively small, light car with driver
only.

The majority of our brand new scooters cost less than HALF that amount to buy.
Notes on cost calculations
- Periodical costs are calculated as paid for
one year then divided for the other periods.
- One month is taken to be 20 working days or
30 for annual costs
- Variable costs such as insurance are not covered.
- Official depreciation rate for motor scooters
and cars is 26% per annum with this taken as the
first year. Value of car before depreciation $6000,
value of scooter before depreciation $1200.
- Figures rounded to nearest cent
- Scooter service figures are approximate but
realistic. These 50cc scooters do not have engine
oil or liquid cooling systems, complicated electronics,
cambelts, and few or no ancillary devices. They
have one spark plug and a washable air filter.
