06/2007 - current top
speed = 75km/h
The Derbi is a so-called 'dual-purpose' scooter, with high ground clearance and knobbly tyres that were rubbish for high speed cornering on tarmac. Its engine is the Suzuki horizontal type, called 'Motorini' in Europe. The factory alloy cylinder is reasonable, but the intake is very restricted, as with many European scooters.
There are some great points like wide alloy wheels, Showa suspension and digital dash, and some poor points like lots of carbon-look film. It is a relatively heavy 50cc bike but we will be taking care of any extra weight. |

07/2007 - New top speed
= 70km/h
We fitted some of the very stylish and high performing MC29 Sava Sport tyres. Without the big knobbly bits of the old tyres, the circumference of the new ones are a little smaller, so top speed has dropped a little. |

We are not yet touching the engine at all as we have big plans for a transplant. Instead the focus at the moment is on upgrading brakes and suspension. The hydraulic lines are replaced with our Fren turbo braided stainless lines, and the brake pads are replaced with our EBC items.
We have added a Koso RPM counter off the shelf too, this will help when roller-tuning the bike for its best powerband on the track.

07/2007
Lightening of the body begins by removing unnecessary items. This includes exhaust shields, mirrors, turn signals, speedo cable, mudguards, ignition assembly, a lot of plastic panels, metal braces, wiring, the seat cushioning and more.
Almost 8kg comes off the bike. |

08/2007
The engine to be transplanted in is a Suzuki V100, highly modified for racing use. This comes from the factory with a 99cc alloy cylinder with fairly boring porting and a head with no squish area. Our choice for the racing cylinder is a Malossi MHR cylinder, giving it seven ports in total and 120cc. This is the porting of the cylinder before we work on it a little - there is room for improvement in everything! |
 |
| Now the stroker crank goes in the V100 casing. The KN Kikaku crank is over 3mm longer and takes total displacement to just under 125cc. New seals and our C3 bearings finish off the bottom end. |
 |
| The engine casing has been modified by opening the gallery from the reed block into the crank case by a few square centimetres, and in preparation for the larger reed block which will sit further out of the casing, we have filled the valleys with epoxy to allow a smoother flow of intake charge. |
 |
| When mounting the engine, the V100 engine is a little shorter overall than the Derbi's original, so we modify the engine mount by welding a Suzuki Sepia hanger to the existing mount. This will add 50mm to the overall wheel base. |
|
| New performance brake shoes for the rear wheel are fitted. These are our EBC type, offering good friction and durability. |
